Kiosk-mode exam browser

Secure Exam

We make sure the user sees only allowed content during the exam, and the computer stays protected against cheating tools — from the first second to the last question.

Why Secure Exam

Every feature is built for one goal — a fair, uninterrupted exam.

Kiosk mode

A full-screen window with no way to exit, switch windows, or reach the desktop during the exam.

Exam URL

The browser opens straight into the exam system automatically — no extra steps for the user.

URL whitelist

Only pre-approved addresses are allowed — any other page is blocked automatically.

Cheat-tool blocking

Screen recording, remote-access, and chat application processes are blocked during the exam.

Admin protection

The browser can only be closed or reconfigured with an administrator password.

Ad blocking

Distracting ads and trackers are blocked so attention stays on the exam.

Keyboard control

System shortcuts (Alt+Tab, Win, Ctrl+Esc, etc.) are blocked during the exam.

Multilanguage

The interface adapts to each institution — full language selection and WCAG accessibility.

Activity log

All important events are recorded and, if enabled, securely sent to a central server.

Automatic updates

The browser checks for the latest version before every exam and notifies the administrator.

How an exam session works

From setup to finish — four simple steps.

1

Setup

The administrator installs the secure browser on workstation computers. Security policies and settings can be applied locally or fetched centrally.

2

Check

On startup, the browser checks the applied security policies; if configured to use a central server, it verifies the latest security policy is applied and checks the browser version.

3

Exam

The secure browser window opens in full-screen mode — access to other applications and keyboard shortcuts are blocked by the security policies.

4

Finish

When the exam ends, the invigilator closes the browser by entering a password via a special key combination in the opened window. Once closed, all security policies are revoked.

LMS and E-Assessment Platform Compatibility

Secure Exam works with all major learning management and e-assessment systems.

No additional integration plugins are required — simply set the exam URL and URL whitelist. Any web-based testing platform accessible through a browser works with Secure Exam.

TAO Testing

Fully compatible with the TAO open-source e-assessment platform. The browser opens directly to the TAO test URL in kiosk mode; 1EdTech QTI 2.1, 2.2, and 3.0 content runs without restriction.

Moodle

Works with the Moodle Quiz module. Add the Moodle test URL to the whitelist and students see only the exam page while the administrator monitors the activity log.

Canvas (Instructure)

Compatible with Canvas LMS Quiz and New Quizzes. Secure Exam acts as a secure browsing shell — no additional LTI plugin is required.

Blackboard Learn

Integrates with Blackboard Tests & Surveys. Add the Blackboard server domain to the whitelist and the browser blocks everything outside it.

Open edX

Compatible with Open edX / edX platforms. Kiosk mode prevents opening backup windows or accessing any other content during the test.

Chamilo LMS

Works with the Chamilo quiz module. Simple configuration — just the Chamilo test URL and, if needed, the deployment domain in the whitelist.

ILIAS

Compatible with the ILIAS testing module. Widely used by exam institutions in Germany and Switzerland — Secure Exam complements ILIAS security policies perfectly.

Other platforms

Any other web-based testing system — Google Forms, Microsoft Forms, or custom exam portal solutions — works with Secure Exam as long as it is accessible through a browser.

1EdTech QTI Standard Support

Secure Exam is fully compatible with all current versions of the 1EdTech Question & Test Interoperability standard.

QTI 2.1

All core item types supported: single choice, multiple choice, match, gap fill, and simple text entry. Response processing runs in the browser or server-side depending on the platform.

QTI 2.2

Full compatibility with QTI 2.2 extensions: extended text responses, math entry fields, and enhanced accessibility metadata. Used by TAO, ILIAS, and many national exam systems.

QTI 3.0

The latest 1EdTech standard with JSON-LD descriptors, improved accessibility, and a modular content structure. Full browser environment fidelity — JavaScript interactions, CSS styling, and media render exactly as authored.

Content runs in the Microsoft Edge WebView2 engine (Chromium-based) — the same rendering pipeline as Edge, so QTI content authors see no unexpected differences between authoring and exam environments.
