Guide

User guide

This guide covers installing, configuring, and using the Secure Exam browser during an exam.

1. Installation

The browser is installed with administrator rights on a single computer, or via group policy (GPO) across an entire classroom/lab. During installation the Microsoft Edge WebView2 component is checked and installed automatically if needed.

2. Configuration

The main configuration fields set by the administrator are described in the table below. The full field list and technical descriptions are in the project's technical documentation.

examUrlThe exam system address opened when the browser starts.
whitelistA list of addresses allowed to be reached during the exam.
allowedMonitorsThe allowed number of connected monitors.
blockScreenRecordingWhether to block screen-recording applications.
blockedProcessesProcesses automatically terminated during the exam (e.g. Zoom, Discord, TeamViewer).
remoteConfigUrlThe address the browser can automatically fetch the current configuration from.
updateServerUrlThe address used to check for new browser versions.
remoteLogUrlThe address activity log entries are sent to.

3. Exam flow

  1. The administrator starts the browser with a prepared configuration.
  2. The browser checks for available updates and, if needed, configuration from a remote server.
  3. A kiosk-mode window opens with the exam system — other apps and windows are unreachable.
  4. After the exam, the administrator enters the admin password to close the browser.

4. Administrator access

The browser can only be closed or have its settings accessed with an administrator password. A one-time backup recovery code is available in case the password is forgotten.

5. Support

If you have questions about installation or configuration, contact your institution's IT administrator or the Secure Exam support team.
